Joan Bakewell is an English broadcaster, journalist, and television presenter. She is best known for her work on the BBC, where she has presented programmes such as Late Night Line-Up, Heart of the Matter, and The Late Show. Bakewell was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England, on 16 April 1933. She attended Stockport High School for Girls and then studied English at Newnham College, Cambridge. After graduating, she worked as a researcher for the BBC, and then as a producer for the BBC's Tonight programme. Bakewell has been married twice, first to the actor and director Michael Bakewell, and then to the actor and director Stephen Frears.

She has two children, a daughter and a son. Bakewell was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Television Society.
