Manchester United in sorrow at Brian Greenhoff’s passing

He may have been from Barnsley but Brian Greenhoff was 100 per cent Manchester United.

And Reds everywhere are today mourning his sudden passing at the age of 60.

Born to a miner in 1953, his first footballing hero was Tommy Taylor, the pride of the south Yorkshire town who would perish in the Munich Air Disaster when Brian was just five.

Although a gifted cricketer as a boy Greenhoff dreamed of playing for his beloved Reds, despite older brother Jimmy making the big time first in the white of old rivals Leeds United.

Spotted by Sir Matt Busby’s famous scouting network, Brian crossed the Pennines in 1968, hoping to follow in the hallowed footsteps of the side who had won the European Cup that year.

But by the time he made his debut, at the age of 20 in 1973, it would be in a team heading for the unthinkable – relegation to Division Two.
